Daddy Dearest

Image
அன்புள்ள அப்பா Dads are extra special to daughters… Yes, Nandu is extraordinarily special to me. I always take pride in introducing myself to relatives and friends as “I am Nandu’s daughter”. Today on his birthday, I would embarrass him with abundant love, praise and acknowledgement. During my early childhood days, my memories are only around my thatha, because appa used to leave early before I woke up and reached home only around my bed time. I would then be anxious to see if he is pampering my sister or me. Obviously, my sister, younger to me by years two (fit to be only in zoo) will be looked upon first and receive the cuddle (That was my first envy on her).  During Sundays, he will be busy cleaning his scooter and rarely had any time for us.  As we grew, I remember him tucking us with bed time Sindbad stories and weekend getaways to beach. His life has not quite turned out as planned, I could see the burden of his responsibility but as all dada he

Twin Goals Please....

World Environment Day  June 5, 2021 (Dr.M.Devasena) Twin goals Please…. Do we still hold World Environment Day and Sustainable Development Goals as our priority? May be not. We are only holding our breath to stay safe. Certainly during the lockdown times, we witnessed improvement in air and surface water quality, reduced road traffic,  critically endangered Dolphins were spotted back in the Ganga River, flamingos gathered in the city of Mumbai, Olive Ridley Turtles were seen on the shores of Rushikuliya in Orissa and mountain goats starting roaming freely in North Wales. Also, radical changes were brought even in our own life style. Now, don’t just jump to conclusions… Post lockdown and post pandemic, we will go back to our old style. Consumption would increase, industries would compete, Government interventions would aim for accelerating the economy, we will consume more and more and give the fragile Environment the least thought. We will forget the carrying capacity of nature when t

Research Gate Sc(a)ore

I have not made any special effort to be active in social media and I stay off of facebook as I am not interested to know if people are watching a movie or making a new dish. But then again, I am nowadays hooked on to Research Gate, particularly Research Gate score. Research Gate (RG), supposed to be a social networking site for scientists to share their research papers, instead started giving me nightmares. Day in and day out, in my laptop, in my desktop, in my mobile (and son’s mobile too), I started checking my RG score as people believe that RG score is a good measure of your research activities. The score includes the research outcomes that we share on the research platform and our interactions with other RG members. Honestly, I have little time to interact with other RG members and if interaction is the best measure of your research's impact, then I will not see even a trivial improvement in my score unless I answer the Q& A section. I also see RG scores of experi

Wise Water Management

WISE WATER MANAGEMENT “We've reached a point in water management where if it's not water reuse, it's water abuse.”                                                                                -  Don Beard Grey water, accounting for approximately 50% of our household water, can be treated effectively, economically and efficiently for further reuse in plethora of applications. Greywater is domestic wastewater generated from kitchen sinks, wash basins and during washing of laundry.  Greywater is a resourceful commodity and its reclamation is considered as a sustainable solution for managing water shortages in many parts of our country. Groundwater and surface water sources are becoming increasingly vulnerable to anthropogenic pollution. The best cost-effective process to reduce water scarcity is the reuse of grey water. Grey water typically breaks down faster than black water and has lower levels of nitrogen and phosphorus. The key difference between greywater and
